Mist in the Darkness

Mist in the Darkness
(Dedicated to Shayetet 13)
-Josiah Vermont

We slip down through your mountains
like fingers of fog
Or chemtrails at dawn..
present, but unnoticed
We are the shadows of wolves at twilight
Blink, look again, nothing is there
Was there ever?

Apparitions of mist in the darkness
I take comfort knowing
those fingers on the left have zero hesitation
In front and to the right
there is no stumble in his step
Twenty paces behind,
my eyes miss nothing
The straggler is always late to the party
but never surprised

Like fog streaming down Slacker Hill
guarding the Golden Gate to San Fransisco
you don’t know where we come from
nor when we’ll be gone
Yet long before you turn breaking news on
phantoms disappear like bats
Just like echoes from pistols barking
before dawn
