I Planted a Flower
-Josiah Vermont

Summertime is for living
all the flowers are in full bloom
Children fill every park
the playgrounds don’t hold enough room
I search for your face
in every place that I go
I planted a flower
Never got to see it grow

I dreamt of a songbird
singing in an angelic tone
Dancing in the sunshine
joy wherever she’d go
Someone asked me the meaning
and I told them I didn’t know
But I planted a flower
Never got to see her grow

Maybe one day that songstress will
sing for an old man once more
Maybe she’ll question the rain
“Who caused the heavens to pour?”
Like the tree I remember
The axe’s recollections go
I planted a flower
Never got to see you grow
