I Planted a Flower
– Josiah Vermont
Summertime is for living
All the flowers are in full bloom
Children fill every park
The playgrounds don’t hold enough room
I search for your face
in every place that I go
I planted a flower
Never got to see it grow
I dreamt of a songbird
singing in an angelic tone
Dancing in the sunshine
radiating joy wherever she’d go
Someone asked my interpretation
but I told them I didn’t know
I planted a flower
Never got to watch it grow
Maybe one day that songstress will
sing for an old man once more
Or maybe she’ll question the rain
“Who caused the heavens to pour?”
Like the tree I remember
It’s the axe’s recollections that go
I planted a flower
Never got to see it grow
